Study Abroad in Taiwan Program
The Study Abroad in Taiwan Program, also called Huayu BEST Scholarship Program, awards student participants 24,000 TWD - about $750 USD - per month, for up to 12 months, to be used in Taiwan to cover tuition, fees, and a portion of living costs. The program partner is National Cheng Kung University (NCKU). Most students choose the summer two-month trip to NCKU, earning six credits toward their Chinese Minor and Xavier graduation. Students who are Pell Grant recipients are strongly encouraged to apply for the federal Benjamin A. Gilman Scholarship. In doing so they can combine with the Critical Need Language Award (CNLA) as Mandarin Chinese is considered one of the 16 languages of critical importance to the U.S. national interests. Gilman awards up to $5,000, and CNLA another $3,000 maximum.
Mandarin learning students who are not Pell-grant recipients can apply for the standalone Critical Language Scholarship, a full-ride, albeit highly competitive, award. Other scholarships are also available, such as the Boren Scholarship (if the study of Mandarin and culture in Taiwan is at least 12 weeks long).
A Xavier University study abroad in Taiwan scholarship - separate from and in addition to the above awards - is possible for 2025-2026 also.
