HIST 2170 - Survey of Medieval Europe Focused study of selected historical themes from late antiquity to the end of the Middle Ages. Topics include the evolving synthesis of Germanic, Christian, and late Roman cultures; ethnogenesis in Europe from the fifth through the tenth centuries; the cult of the saints in the early Middle Ages; the ideology of sacral kingship; church reform, the Investiture Controversy, and the medieval papacy; Jews in medieval Europe; and the transformation of the medieval state from a network of personal ties to a system of government rooted in royal bureaucracy and administration.
