IBTH 5224 - African Middle Ages An historical survey of Africa from the end of the Roman Empire to the arrival of European explores and slave traders in the 16th century. Particular attention will be given to development of African Christianity in Egypt, Ethiopia, and Nubia. Also studied will be the effect of Islam on sub-Saharan Africa as well as the Maghreb; the relation between medieval Europe and the African states, particularly during the period of the Last Crusades. Some time will be devoted to the Black Empires of the West and the Arab colonization of the East. (3)
